Failure to Write

In the wee small hours of the morning, when the whole wide world is fast asleep I'm lying awake wondering why it is I've got Carly Simon stuck in my head when I've been listening to Edith Piaf's rendition of L'accordéoniste on loop all day.

I'm frustratingly nocturnal at the moment. Frustrating because I have two LX plots to attend tomorrow and I'd like to be awake for them please. As well as tickets to see Don Giovanni. Again with the awakeness.

Since I wasn't sleeping anyway, I figured I might as well update my sorely neglected blog.

Let's see, last time I wrote I'd just planted a mini-herb garden for a show. Well, the season went really well. So well in fact that Kat & I don't own any plants (dead or alive) from the show. Since then I've moved onto another show and am in the process of looking for more work over the silly season. Mind you I think I could do with a couple of days off to sort out my body clock and get a little R&R but we'll see. Plenty of time for that when the theatres are dark again.

Other items of note in no particular order are:
- my shoulder (which I fell on about two weeks ago after a particularly sleepless night... futons should never be underestimated for danger, can anyone say trip hazard?) is feeling much better but is at the annoying stage where it feel good but as soon as I do anything more than hold a cup of coffee in my left arm it begins to complain. Not that I've been doing anything but resting it of course... ahem

- Mum's started her next course of chemo after a week's break last week. For some reason I kept thinking it was her last course last time... hopefully this is the one. She's getting great results from the treatment but I think she's looking forward to stopping the chemo.

- I've made it further on my NaNoWriMo novel this year than ever before, but I'm still many thousands of words behind where I should be. Perhaps I should attack that instead of this blog... I should probably also note that I'm only ahead of my previous attempts by about 1,000 words... oh well, only 48,000 more to go...

Anyhow, that's all that springs to mind at the moment. I think I'm approaching the "low" in my sleep/wake cycle, so I'm going to make another attempt to fall asleep. Wish me luck!

Mixed Up Day

When I woke up this morning I had no idea that I would finish the day owning three Tupperware mixing bowls. Admittedly it's not a thought that strikes many people first thing in the morning.

I decided that while I'm not working I should use this time to do as many of the things that I talk about doing when I am working. Like getting fit. After working on Festival FINA I'd toned up a bit and am hoping to keep it that way. Figured if I can keep fit I'll stay healthier and do less stupid things (eg. coffee table incident in Doha). So after staring at the grey clouds outside I decided to start the morning with a gentle hour of stretching. This was followed by dancing like maniac to music on my iPod (happy owner of two versions of 99 Luftballons).

Having disturbed the dogs (and any neighbours who happened to be passing) I plonked myself on the couch to catch up on Max's Top 100 Tear Jerkers countdown. This formed the last part of my plan, to sit on the couch and keep knitting and crocheting for the stall.

Just after Michael Bolton's How Am I Supposed to Live Without You my parents arrived home. We had lunch and in less than an hour I was off to my first Tupperware party. I was determined not to spend any money. I don't have a house. Why would I need Tupperware? (Aside from the pretty new hot pepper colour range and durability).

Two hours later I'd placed an order for some tumblers (to keep my tea in), a 2L mixing bowl (excellent size and it has a splash guard) and a small 260mL container. I've never owned a mixing bowl despite my love of baking so I figured this would be an investment what with my love of baking and all... Mum's also ordered my birthday present, the baking mixing bowl set (which has a 3.5L and 600mL pair of bowls with the great splash guard too). They're blue and pretty and importantly dishwasher safe. I love them and can't wait till they arrive in a couple of weeks. There will be much baking!

Oh and the number one song was Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah.

A Cool Doha Night

Last night the temperature dropped to 25 degrees Celsius with a cool (probably 23-24 degree) breeze and I kid you not some of the locals had jackets and beanies on. I must admit that it did actually feel cool to us as the maximum temperature that day had been 31 degrees. (Although I would swear that it was warmer)

As I was on the bus on the way home, Under the Milky Way started playing on my iPod. That song triggers a myriad of feelings and thoughts when it comes on. So much so that I can't really find words outside of my head to describe them accurately. I'll always see ballerina's flying in the air with pyro wands and silver trial bikes dancing with them. I still remember how wonderful it was to know that my friends were watching what I was watching and that I had my family in the stadium with me sharing the moment. It also makes me think of home. Not as in Melbourne, but home as in where my friends and family are. I actually think of my friends as a bit of an extended family because like my family they're always there for me. I can't see the Milky Way here in Doha. The light pollution is worsened by the dust and sand that's always in the air and as such there aren't that many stars that can be seen from the city. For the first time since I left Melbourne in mid-August I missed home.

With perfect timing as always, Nick C will be arriving in Doha in the morning. I called yesterday to let him know that I'll be buddying him and meeting him at the airport. I managed to catch him just after Matt's show finished and it was really good to hear both their voices even with the ridiculous delay. There's something wonderful about being able to say to a friend from home, I'll see you on Saturday. It's not something that I've done for awhile!

I've got a long day of work ahead of me but I know that it's going to fly by because I'm working with great people and it's an amazing environment that I'm working in. Gene's at home tucked in bed, apparently not sleeping which is bad because he starts work in seven hours, and well for all who've asked. He sends his love to you all, but in a more, Gene-manner than I've managed to pass on.

We're both really busy and it's kind of strange being in the same place, sharing the same house and not seeing each other. I really should be used to it by now but it still gets me everytime :)

This post sounds more melancholy than I expected it to. I suppose I should stop listening to The Happy Prince just before bed because the story always makes me sad!

Hope you're all well and thanks for the emails. They make this busy, restless and exciting period easier to work through!

PS. The cold is much better. Sleep is a wonderful thing. Novel is doing less well. Completely stuck and have returned to knitting Mum's socks while procrastinating.

Improving

Things are looking up today. I've had 12 almost solid hours sleep. Woke about at the 6 hour mark in a panic because I thought I was late for work, turned out it was only 3:43am. Still sitting on just under 2,500 words of novel but I'm still pretty happy with that considering my workload and recent cold.

Happily the cold has subsided quite a bit after my good long sleep so I'm sipping on my raspberry & echinacea tea having just had my vitamin C, spirulina and garlic oil capsules and I'm feeling fine! :)

Gene & I are both very excited at Nick's impending arrival in Doha and look forward to welcoming him to the glories of desert life (tee hee). No, it'll be fine Nick! No really! You can trust us. :)

I've already bumped into one of the girls I went to uni with over here who's here to followspot. It's always nice to see a familiar face when you're abroad.

Totally stuck on my novel. Have contemplated re-starting but am trying to fight that urge. Next year I'm going to have a plot outline I swear.

iPod is still going well and I'm happily (or tearily) falling asleep to "The Happy Prince" and other stories by Oscar Wilde. I always cry when I hear that story. Not sure why I decided to listen to it before bed.

Okay, running away to be busy now. Can't wait to show you all pictures of Doha when I get back!

Mr Postman look and see...

Sadly no iPod has appeared yet and is unlikely to appear until, at best, Tuesday. I should probably stop obsessively checking the pidgeon holes for it until then but I'm optimistic!

I had a fabulous weekend with my gorgeous man. We spent Friday night relaxing and discussing our post-Games holiday. We've nutted out some dates and are aiming for our return flight to Melbourne on the 9th February (I guess arriving on the 10th, but we'll have to wait and see). Now all that remains are flight & accommodation bookings and much saving.

Yesterday, after sleeping in until the luxurious hour of 11am, we had beef(?) kuftas for breakfast and then asked ourselves what do you do when it's 38 degrees celcius and humid? Naturally the answer to that question is swing dance! So we set up my speakers and danced in our carport to the amusement of the neighbours passing us on the way to the pool (probably a more sensible option). Photos were taken but I've yet to see them. If they're not too terrible they may even get posted :)

After a brief altercation between my shoulder blade and the corner of the coffee table (the coffee table won. ouch!) we decided to rest for awhile and program a few slower songs to dance to while I nursed my injury with a packet of frozen mash potato. As soon as the aromatic garlic and herbs in the mash potatoes started to permeate the air we decided it was time to return my "ice pack" to the freezer for a bit and keep on dancing. By this stage our carport was in full sun and to be honest we were melting! Plenty of ice tea helped us through the next few hours as we tried to practice our moves and I'm fairly sure we made up some moves too! We're really missing our swing dancing classes here but I think we were doing okay.

The sun faded from our carport and that was our cue to finish for the day. (We're sensible people really). Gene had a haircut in Mel's carport (Mel & Dobbie's Barber Shop) and then it was time for us to head inside and consider dinner.

While considering dinner we started playing the Sims 2. This delayed dinner considerably. We ended up having corned beef, eggs and rice while continuing our game. Our Sims live in "Melbourne". I think it's a joke because it's always raining in the game. Still miss the rain by the way.

The hours (both simulated and actual) flew past us and before I knew it there were just seven hours left until I had to get on the shuttle bus for work. Whoops. Pumpkin time. We lay in bed and chatted about random things. Mainly PS2 related and then roughly five and a half hours before I needed to be on the bus I finally fell asleep.

Suprisingly I was on the bus about 10 minutes earlier than I usually am this morning. I even had time to polish my boots and have a quick breakfast before I had to leave the house. Amazing what a short sleep can do for me. So it's the start of another week and as the Carpenters karaoke DVD (complete with typos) serenaded me on the way to work I thought about when my iPod was going to arrive so that I could listen to my audiobooks and music on the way to work. I was briefly distracted by the image of Singapore's Underwater World during Mr Postman but that soon passed.

Tonight I'm going to the Ramadan tent at the Ritz Carlton with Amy & PC. I can sleep later. There's too much to see and do in Doha!

Mannerisms

I've migrated my blog to Blogger Beta and I'm really enjoying the new functions (the layout tool is MUCH easier for scripting-beginners like me). Sadly I can't comment on anyone's blog who hasn't upgraded... or at least that's why I think my comment didn't make it onto Naomi's blog... *sigh*

I've bought a new iPod and it's currently being couriered from Sydney. Ebay is a beautiful thing. With any luck it should arrive in the next 2-4 working days... I may get it as early as Saturday or Sunday in that case!

This means I can go back to enjoying my new Fabienne Delsol album "No Time For Sorrows" which I was enjoying on my ride home from work until the iPod was no more. Favourite songs include Laisser Tomber Les Filles and Don't Fall In Love With Me. Richard Ashcroft Live From London is pretty awesome too.

My parents have arrived home from their 25 day tour of China. I was starting to get a little worried when I hadn't heard from them on Sunday which is when I was expecting them to have arrived back in Melbourne. They were back a little late because of a typhoon in Japan. This highlighted to me how little I know about what's going on outside of Doha. It sounds like they had a great time but I think they're happy to be home too.

It's funny how when you get older you end up a bit like your parents. Well it's not surprising really because they're the ones who probably spent the most time with you in your formative years. I've noticed that I tend to get a bit snippy when I don't get an "I've arrived safely" or "I'll be home later than expected" message many hours after I was expecting my family to be home. Ah yes, the tables have turned. I've also noticed that my once legible signature has now turned into something much closer to my Dad's. Before I know it I'll have a couple of pugs running around the house and a great home theatre system... :)

Heading North

There's an hour left before we head to the airport to ensure that our bikes can join our trip to Brisbane. We're finally all packed, rooms tidied, dogs stressed at our leaving, it seems that we're ready to go!

It still hasn't really hit me that I'm going for my first work-related travel trip. I'm pretty excited still. Actually had trouble sleeping last night! I've got my maps of Brisbane CBD and South Brisbane as well as directions from our hostel to the Metro Arts Centre. I'm pretty happy that we only seem to be 2.88km from where we're working so it's not a huge hike to get there.

Currently waiting for the rest of the Herman's Hermits songs to download in iTunes. Mrs Brown's daughter is lovely indeed. There has to be much tacky music for a month long trip. Them's the rules!

There's an internet cafe set up at our hostel so the internet access should be pretty good. I'm still telling myself that I'll go swimming everyday in the pool there. If it's not heated I may yet revise that plan.

It's looking like we'll have a quite a few days free in QLD at the end of our trip so we're thinking of heading further up north if we have the funds and travelling back to Brissie for the return flight. Still remains to see how much time we have though. It's likely to be a spur of the moment decision from the two of us... a bit like the inn stays in Nikko & Narita but less Japanese.

Well, it's idiot check time now that my cheesy old songs have been added to my iTunes library. So I'll catch you all from Brisbane!

As a final side note, I can't believe we won't get to see Naomi when we get home! We'll miss you Naomi!

Blog me a blog

I am fully aware that I am posting far too frequently for a person working between 12 and 14 hour shifts but it's not like I'd be sleeping anyway.

Things are getting pretty exciting right now as we've hit the single figures in the countdown to the Games. Channel 9 did a fly over the G and tacked the shots onto the end of a story about the medal designs. There are a lot of people working really hard and really long hours in the lead up to March 15th and it's great to be a part of the team. The atmosphere is sensational and I can only imagine what it will be like during the actual show. Being the sentimental girl that I often wish I wasn't, there may be a pair of glistening eyes as I watch the show as is often the case with opening nights for me.

I spent most of my day walking around with large trays of coffee as it was rather cool in the stands today. There are a few run down and sniffly people who I'm desperately hoping I didn't make sick. The doc did say I wasn't contagious... *sigh*

My night rounded off with the creation of a new spreadsheet (I'm becoming an rather big over-user of excel on this job) and being surrounded by my beloved papers.

I still found myself angry this morning about the incident with the dog. She's more than likely still in the hospital and when I called to check in was advised that 31 "stray" dogs had been hit by cars on Sunday and taken to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital. That made me more sad than anything else. I can only hope that some of the drivers stopped for the dogs.

Nothing much else to report really. I'm missing Gene bucket loads right now. It's funny how even though I had a fairly full day I still found time to miss Gene and feel lonely. I even found myself singing quietly while walking through the stadium. It's sad I know :)

I am eternally grateful to Matt for returning my VAST cd as I have been missing it over recent times. Music for the soul that first CD. I'm still trying to develop a taste for the second CD but it needs more time.

While I would usually sign off with a comment about bed, there is a pressing need for some food right now. My stomach says so.

A New Year, a Big Day and an odd odour

It's been an excellent weekend overall! I just can't believe it's Monday so soon! Friday night I had a lovely dinner at Mr Wolf with Nomes, Nick and Caroline consisting of some delicious pizzas. I sense it would be an expensive dining experience if I brought Gene there though... although it would actually allow me to finish the fabulously rich chocolate mousse... Hmmm...

I arrived home to two very tired and hungry pugs who were happy to see me... or at least their dinner bowls full, before spending the rest of my evening working on my crochet dress.

Saturday morning saw me unpicking the previous evening's crochet work because TV is less good for my counting and instruction following capabilities when tired... Apparently I have limits.. pfft!

Being Chinese New Year my folks wanted to ensure that I didn't miss out on seeing them even though they are in Singapore so they headed to Wisma Atria and stood under the web cam and called to say hi which was really sweet. The evening was spent with the Nic(k)s deciphering our Chinese/Western zodiacs and it was hilarious! On occassions crazily accurate and other times just crazy. It was good fun.

My very first Big Day Out was much fun if a little warm and muggy. The V Invigorate Tent was a real winner for me with the misting spray and bubble machine providing entertainment for not just the patrons but the security staff too. The Silent Disco was awesome! A definite favourite of the day with Gene & I dancing like maniacs to songs that were being broadcast through headphones to all on the dance floor. The Lord Mayor John So seemed most amused at the sight although I don't think he joined the dancers.

So a little tired and a little sunburnt I jumped into the car today to head into town for work to discover that school holidays have just come to a close. Despite having left the house 15 minutes early I ended up 15 minutes late... and $21 poorer for the parking fee. Not happy.

It was a slow day in the office. Mainly waiting for people to get back to me. Tomorrow's looking better with lots of paperwork to process. I love my paperwork!

The most interesting thing that happened today was the discovery of a dead mouse under my boss' hi-vis vest... Good reason not to leave stuff on the floor of our current office really. :)

Lost Hour(s)

Another lazy day today. Nothing truly unusual! Oh except that today was one of the currently rare days where Gene didn't actually have to be anywhere today, so that was nice. Unsurprisingly we got up late and slacked about the house for a bit. The best bit was listening to the mixed mini-disc that he'd put together for me about two years ago (I promise I won't get too mushy). It has great songs like "Frontier Psychiatry", "Common People" (the Pulp version NOT William Shatner) and "Here Comes Your Man" just to name a few of the songs that I hadn't heard in ages. A great mix of mellow, rocky and just silly songs (like "Old Man Sam" which is almost country rock in some ways but still so good).

We finally made it to the supermarket today, not that we bought any food. No, that would be a little too crazy. We ended up buying toothbrushes (with tongue scrapers to "improve our breath", man we're suckers sometimes), exit mould, some scrubbing sponges and some cordial. Oh and we made two dollars for returning the trolley we picked up.

The rest of the day is the best though. We spent the entire evening staying home and watching Press Gang Season 2 (which I'm shocked and horrified is not coming up on the amazon search below). Ah Spike and Linda. So much 80's goodness! Now it's just a matter of waiting for Season 3 to come out on DVD.

I was knitting a scarf out of "Rockery" wool today while watching Press Gang and have rather annoyingly run out of the wool. So I guess I'll be making a trip into town for that. Oh that and money's come through for the last play I did so YAY! I'm going to use some of it to get wool for the scarf I said I'd design for one of the cast members. I'd like to finish it for her sometime before the cold weather disappears.

I'm also hoping to make something for my little cousins (who won't be little for much longer I think). They'll be in town this weekend for my aunt's 60th birthday. I hardly ever see them and I want them to know that I do think of them. I'm just terrible with kids really. Well, they seem to like me well enough. I think it's because I'm generally their height or smaller (by the time they turn 10) therefore I don't really pose much of a threat. I don't know. I just didn't spend much time with people who were younger than me growing up and I guess I'm paranoid that I'll be patronising even though I've been assured that I'm not. If there's one thing I hated when I was little it was being patronised.

Tomorrow should be a good day. As long as I drag my sorry self out of bed at a decent hour and remember everything that I need to bring when I pick Gene up from work, things should work out well!

We're going to my parents tomorrow night so that I can spend some time back at their place doing the family thing & fixing up our computers. That and Gene's working out that way for the better part of the day.

Okay. Now it's time for me to stop blathering on. I'm a little too distracted to write I think. Distracted by what? By pretty much anything and everything.

Hi-di-hi-di-hi-di-hi!

Okay, I'll stop listening to the BBVD's Live CD tonight I promise... but it's just so good! "Minnie the Moocher's" playing right now. Great song that.

Despite the weatherman's prediction of rain all day, it's been nothing but blue skies. So I really should be doing the laundry - god knows we have enough of it - but I'm sitting at the computer tapping away at the keyboard instead. At least I should go and bring in the clean washing before the weatherman proves right.

Just as an aside, one thing I love about keeping a blog is the resource of sites like Dictionary.Com for those brief moments of is-that-really-a-word? that I'm sure we all experience.

Today like the last few has been a pretty lazy day. Gene & I woke up at around noon and only sidled out of bed at 1:30pm when the weather had warmed up quite nicely. After that it was to a cafe called "Mule" (not sure if it's relating to the animal, spinning machine or locomotive, your guess is as good as mine). Gene had the big breakfast which looked great but he said it was okay. I had the steak sandwich that was supposedly made with pide bread but I'm fairly sure it came on a white bread roll that had been lightly toasted, but who's picking?

After that he dropped me back at home and headed off to work which brings me to typing here. There was a bit of job hunting and other mundane tasks like that, but it bores me to speak of that so I won't.

Last night I finished reading "Geomancer" which is volume 1 in "The Well of Echoes" trilogy by Ian Irvine. Honestly I was a little disappointed. I feel like it was a little clunky in parts and somewhat predictable. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to get the other two books in the trilogy and probably get the new book his written too. I suppose I remember enjoying the "View From the Mirror" quartet so much that I had pretty high expectations. It was one of those books that I didn't want to put down but I could if I had to. Part of me thinks that I've just read too many sci-fi/fantasy books lately and I'm getting used to the basic formula that many of them follow at some point or another. Still there are other books that are quite engaging and to an extent follow the formula like "Abarat" by Clive Barker, which I've very much enjoyed and I'm still looking for the next book in the series. I love the idea that each hour of the day has it's own island. Besides, how could you not love a character called Christopher Carrion the Lord of Midnight? (I just googled Christopher Carrion and the first site that came up advises that he is the assistant managing attorney of a law firm. How fantastic!)

Now I'm just trying to work out what to read next. I've read the prologue to Jack Dann's "The Memory Cathedral: A Secret History of Leonardo da Vinci" and I think that is definitely a contender. However I'm looking for something a little lighter so I think I'll be reading "The Black Crusade" by Richard Harland. (Apparently this book doesn't show up on Amazon's website). I bought a copy for Gene at Continuum 3 last month and he's been busy reading Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. Meanwhile I was busy reading John Varley's "The Golden Globe". Anyway I just picked up "The Black Crusade" to have a read of the first couple of pages and I appear to be reading chapter two already, so it looks like it's a winner!

Having changed the CD to chillout-French music, I think I'm going to curl up with my book and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon!
