A Disjointed Catch Up

I can't help but notice that my lack of blogging seems to stem from just after Gene & I broke up last year. It's almost as if when we broke up I couldn't find any words to write. No way of really saying what I thought and I really didn't feel a need to share how I felt as frankly that would have been boring.

So almost a year on I guess I'm still trying to find myself. Not so much remember what it's like to be single, but discover my independence and learn to enjoy it.

Okay, random burst of self-reflection over (phew!).

Let's just say that there wasn't a great deal of reading in May & June... Combined reading list for those months include:
1. The Dragon Queen
2. Pardon My French
3. Growing Up Asian in Australia

If only event management plans counted in the list... but as thick as some of them were, they're not quite books.

June consisted of many weekend trips from Brisbane to Melbourne & Sydney. Visiting family, farewelling friends and celebrating a birthday. It's a good thing I don't mind flying really. After the last weekend away the Festival really started to ramp up production. Defintely my favourite part that's not the actual Festival.

July saw the start of the Festival. We worked hard, we played hard. There were many opening nights and closing nights celebrated. It was good. Was lucky enough to see some shows which was rather novel. It was all over in a haze of beer, gin & wine and before we knew it we were bare-foot bowling on a beautiful sunny August day.

It would be hard to believe that only a fortnight ago I was sitting in the sun watching people bowl... except that I landed back in Melbourne on Saturday. It was not sunny. Luckily it wasn't too cold either. I keep telling myself that it's "the same temperature as Brisbane at night... but brighter".

Right now I'm in Sydney enjoying the sunshine and 20˚C days... well I was, it's supposed to storm tomorrow. Still trying to work out what I'll do tomorrow... am thinking it could be a good day for a museum or possibly the aquarium. I may yet fit an antique fair in.

I must admit I'm in a bit of a strange mood tonight. It's been a bit of a odd day. I woke up with a migraine and feeling a bit out of sorts. Did a bit of shopping. Had a nap. Woke up when my phone rang. It was Dad. My grandma in Singapore has stage 4 cancer. I pondered the fact that my Mum's family has had and excellent health history until now when both my Mum & Grandma have cancer. I'm starting to think that my random (morbid) thought that I'll die in the water is possibly incorrect and that it's more likely to be cancer. Strangely I'd rather the water but I'm trying not to dwell on that as I don't particularly want to die at this point in time. When I get bad news that I can't do anything about I turn to depressing music to soothe my woes. So after a good hour of depressing tunes I headed out to have cocktails with a few friends. Dinner followed the cocktails (although perhaps it should have been the other way around) and I must say I'm in a much better mood having gone out.

So to summarise... I had a fabulous time in Brisbane and miss the lifestyle up there although it's still not really my city. Am restless, reflective and honestly I think I'm a little angry with myself. Akrasia, what can I say? Do better. Rocks. Anyhow, no point dwelling on that, just have to keep moving forward. Right?

Less disjointed post next time, I promise.

Numerical Update

611 days ago I left Brisbane and just 4 days ago I returned.
3 of those 4 days were spent with a fever averaging 38˚C. Yesterday I drank 1.25L of water and 1.15L of flavoured still mineral water. I also slept for 12 hours. I'm feeling much better and the fever is almost gone :)

It took me 1.75 bus rides to work out how to get the bus to stop without actually having to call out to the bus driver (or in the case of my first bus ride, continuing for an extra three stops). Apparently I managed to get the really old buses twice on my first day. All other buses have had the red stop button I'm used to.

I've only been working at the Brisbane Festival for 3 days and today marks 100 days till the festival opens.

While I've been up here I have read one book, gotten lost once and been to the doctor once. I've made an appointment to go back to get my third and final (yay!) Gardasil vaccination.

Since arriving in Brisbane I have received 22 text messages from people I know, one text message from someone I don't know, 12 messages via facebook and many emails of which 2 were personally addressed to me.

I have to be back in the office in 10.5 hours and given that I need at least 45 minutes to wake up, 10-15 minutes to get to the bus stop (which is not that far away but the traffic lights, and the traffic, are a little kooky) and another 20 minutes to get to work, I should probably go to bed now.

For those interested it took me 34 minutes to write all this because I kept getting distracted by a Skype conversation regarding donuts.

Post-Festival Update

Tonight I had dinner with my family for the first time in a month. It's strange to think that we're all living under the same roof and our only interactions have been in passing as I waltz out the door (or stumble depending on what time I made it home from work the previous night).

The (Age 2007) Melbourne Fringe Festival was great fun as I expected. I had some fabulous shows which some of my fabulous friends came to see. It was great to see them at the festival as it was the first time I'd seen some of them in months. Plus it meant that there were people out and seeing theatre. The Festival Club was our place to unwind and you could generally find us tucked around the lighting & sound desks or jumping up to follow spot random patrons and staff as the night traveled on and we burnt up the dance floor.

As is always the case, I blinked and the festival was over and I was moving onto my next gig. It's funny being back at uni but not as a student. I'm still amused by the idea but am taking great pleasure at watching the cast working. We open in two weeks time and I think the show is going to be great. Besides, with the Spiegeltent in walking distance, I'm sure that opening night drinks will last into the wee hours.

Mum's doing well and if I'm not mistaken has one more chemo treatment for this course and then gets at least one week off (which she's looking forward to). The doctors seem pleased with her progress which is great!

I kept meaning to write during the Fringe but I could barely string a sentence together let alone a thought. You should have seen me ordering coffee...

Well, I should stop procrastinating and get back to sorting boxes of stuff. I'm gradually packing and weeding through things that I clearly don't need anymore as they've been sitting in boxes for over a year now. It's a painful boring process but I'm sure it'll feel great once I'm done.

I'm feeling a tad guilty about how little packing I've achieved as I spent most of the day browsing YouTube on the AppleTV and teaching myself Fur Elise on the piano. Yep it's been a productive day.

Fringe Family

Three tech rehearsals down, one to go and then we’re on! So far it’s looking like I’ll have an interesting mix of shows with music being a strong theme.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been two years since I’ve been in the Meeting Room at the North Melbourne Town Hall. There are so many familiar faces around the venue. People who I still remember coming over to our house in the wee hours of the morning having paid an exorbitant amount of cash for drinks from a 24 hour bottle shop after the bar closed early one night. As always there are new faces but Melbourne Fringe will always feel a little like a family reunion in that way.

Speaking of family, my Mum’s cousin is down from Singapore for a holiday. We went shopping last night at good ol’ Knox City and Dad’s taking her to have a look around the Vic Markets today. She’s been here for almost a week but I’ve barely seen her as by the time I’m home from work she’s in bed and I leave moments after dragging my sorry self out of bed in the morning. I must admit that I’m looking forward to sleeping in on Sunday morning before spending the afternoon reading the script before Monday’s rehearsal.

It’s good to be busy again! Now if I could start sleeping well again then life would be nigh on perfect.

Festival Life

Well the Darwin Festival has well and truly opened... so much so that we're into our final week of shows! It's been an amazing time up here and really great to see so many people coming to see the shows.

Photos of the venue would have been posted (along with more regular posts) had my laptop's hard-drive decided to die on me. So as a result there are no pictures and yet another fortnightly update.

The Santos Concert on the Esplanade was our big opening night. We had over 6,000 people attending which is not bad given the population is estimated at 71,900 people (in 2006). Excellent music although I did miss the final act to go and paint a set.

I was lucky enough to operate three performances of Play Play which was a physical theatre show from Singapore. It was quirky, occasionally morbid but balanced with a great sense of humour. I wish that more people could have seen it! It was also great to get to know the company who taught me how to play "paper, scissors, rock" in a group. An excellent way to pass some idle time!

There hasn't been much sleeping since we opened. Partly because we're busy through the day doing the office work. Partly because we're busy at night at shows. Also partly because SoCo Cargo is a two minute walk from my doorstep and as such it seems almost rude not to drop in to say hi to the crew there...

In other news I had a minor accident in a truck and was bitten several times by a spider at the same time. It was a rather boring 5 minutes of my life but all is well!

Today I had a little R&R with the crew from the Star Shell when we spent the morning at Berry Springs have a swim in both the main & lower pools as well as the actual spring. I must say I'm a little sore having spent four solid hours swimming in the water but I'd do it again in a flash.

Tonight I'll be back at the Star Shell to say hello and soak up the atmosphere. Not to mention the great food that's down there... Why cook and create dishes to clean when you can have excellent food on site?

Well, I thought I'd just say a quick hello before I run away to Festival land again.
See you soon!

Two Weeks of Good Intentions

As the lack of blogging in the last few weeks has shown, good intentions sometimes don’t get you very far. This comes from years of finely tuned procrastination skills, recent increased personal letter writing and (I like to think) the Festival opening being next week.

Life has been fairly uneventful in a rather pleasant way. The weather has been consistently warm and sunny. The sunsets are always beautiful and I feel a little spoilt knowing that most of the people I know are going through an actual cold winter.

Since I last wrote I watched 2 seasons of the Gilmore Girls (five and six) until I started dreaming about the show. Season 2 of House was next although my lack of self-discipline saw me watching 4 of 6 discs the night before my senior first aid course. 8 hours of first aid training on 3 hours sleep is less fun than you might think.

I made sure that I had marginally more sleep the next night, after all I only had two more discs to go…

So I now hold a current senior first aid certificate and I rock at bandaging. This is not meant as an encouragement to do something that requires bandaging!

My DVD marathons aside, work has taken up most of my days. The hours have started to get a little erratic with somedays ending at 5:30pm and others at 11:30pm. On the bright side (?) they’re all starting at approx 9am. Right now I’m in tech spec & scheduling land. Especially since I have crew arriving in town this weekend. It’s a little frustrating trying to chase people up in Darwin. It’s almost like they’re on slightly faster timeframe than Doha time, but not by much. Jaia and I also letter dropped over 2% of the population of Darwin. So far we’ve dropped letters to 1300 houses notifying them of our main venue as they live in the area. It’s astounding to think that so many people have our numbers. Luckily they’re not all calling at once. Sadly the big print runs of letters killed our printer… it took over 6 hours to print 1100 pages. I was not a happy camper at the end of that day…

On a brighter note, some of you may have heard of the Triple J Goes AWOL concert that was in Humpty Doo. Well it just so happens that Humpty Doo is about half an hour from Darwin. So we packed a picnic rug and headed out to check out Blue King Brown, Something For Kate and Missy Higgins. It was a great night despite it being the first dry concert that many of us had been to. (The vodka tonics were flowing when we got back into town).

At some point in the next week I’ll be moving from the city, to Nightcliff, which is all of fifteen minutes drive from the city. I had a look at the place today and I feel spoilt to be moving so close to the beach. It’ll be wonderful!

Having had nothing exciting to report in the last couple of weeks, I’ll leave you with some photos from the Darwin Show. While I was updating my first aid skills I was missing out on such highlights as pig racing and pig diving. The unofficial world record for pig diving was broken at the show. Sadly there wasn’t a Guiness Book of Records person to officiate… Miss Piggy (the record breaking pig) will have to wait till the next diving meet. Many thanks to Viv & Rosie for taking the photos.

Launched!

We're officially launched! Darwin Festival 2007, check out our program even if you can't make it up here. It's looking to be a http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifgreat festival.

Our program launch was very well received last night and a good night had by all. It was good to see everything come together.

It's been a busy week and as a result it's passed in the blink of an eye. I'm not really sure where it went but I have a vague suspicion that I'll be cleaning out the cupboards one day and stumble upon a pile of lost time huddled in the corner... I can dream!

Not much else to report other than a second crochet bag is almost complete and my attempt to memorise The Sneetches seems to have stalled but I'm getting back to that now that the launch is over.

Darwin is still a buzz with the filming of Australia. Nicole's made the front page of the paper for the past couple of days. No star sightings for me but I haven't really had the time to head down to the wharf for a sticky beak.

Not long till the Festival opens so erratic blog post season is back!

Thinking of all back at home who are freezing in the Melbourne winter (two days ago there was an article in the paper "South to blame for our recent cold snap" after a few 15˚C nights)

Relaxing Darwin

Darwin is a gorgeous city, if a little warm for my tastes. There are tropical trees in almost every street and the wildlife - early rising - is amazingly vocal. Having been here less than a week it's still a bit rosy for me but I can imagine coming back for a relaxing break.

I took some time to walk around the city today, partially to sate my need to explore and also to fulfill my mission to get a hat before tomorrow's festival. It was a pretty successful day!

My walk took me down Mitchell Street which is one of the main streets in Darwin. It's the backpacker and tourist street complete with the 24 hour Coles which I'm sure I'll be well acquainted with soon. I browsed a couple of shops and tried on a ridiculous number of hats before I found myself in a hat shop just off Mitchell Street. I made the decision not to leave the shop until I had a hat in hand. I'm ashamed to say it took half an hour of hunting through hats and trying them on before I found one that fit, with a wide brim, that didn't look too ridiculous.

Armed with a hat I headed towards Fisherman's Wharf to check out the Darwin Seafood Festival site where I'll be stage managing tomorrow (as you do on your first weekend in Darwin). It's looking good and I watched the sound check for Double Entendre who played an awesome version of Caravan. I think it'll be a hot but really great day tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it.

One other piece of exciting news (if you're me) involves the purchase of a second-hand book in what could become my favourite shop in Darwin... the secondhand bookstore that buys books as well as sells them. While browsing the sci-fi/fantasy section I was looking for the familiar covers... Pratchett, Adams... Gaiman... when I realised that I didn't see any familiar Gaiman covers... On closer inspection, I found a copy of Ghastly Beyond Belief, the somewhat out of print book of quote that he wrote with Kim Newman. Best $6 I've spent in awhile. There goes lunch tomorrow...

Before I run off to lounge on my bed and soak up the good-bad sci-fi/fantasy goodness, I want to thank everyone who's sent their well wishes after my last post. I was in a bit of a horrible place but it's getting better now. Mum seems to be in good spirits and there's a team of people looking after her so I know she's in good hands.

Things Beginning With the Letter "s"

Festival Fina closed on Sunday with some delightful weather and crowds after a wet and windy start. Definite favourites for the festival were (in no particular order) Quidams - Herbert's Dream, Group F, Guo Yue, ERTH Dinosaur Petting Zoo, Ulik and Le Snob and the memorable installation of Méchanique Vivante's Song of the Sirens. It was great to see all the performances run smoothly and even better to see people showing up in the Melbourne weather. Yay for Nick and Nomi coming to say hi!

I must say that's one thing I love about Melbourne. Weather is no barrier for the arts/festival loving people. They just bring their umbrellas, jackets and rugs and huddle together to enjoy the show. It's great and very much appreciated when you're totally soaked to the skin and still have at least 8 hours of your shift to go.

After a swift load-out of the bulk of the festival life's been slipping back to craft heaven for me. Mingled of course with large doses of Final Fantasy XII and season 1 of Buffy.

This Sunday we'll be getting ready to farewell Naomi with a lovely picnic and what was going to be some blues dancing that I was very much looking forward to...

Sadly I slipped down the bottom half of the stairs yesterday and landed (well but painfully) on my knee and ankle. It all happened a bit quickly and involved the dog stepping on the back of my pants causing the fall as I was holding my laptop... Laptop is in tact but my leg is still a little sore when I put weight on it. I may have to take a rain check on the dancing for a bit.

So I've decided to spend my restful time making scarves to bring to the picnic on Sunday in the hopes that they might find a good home. I'm slowly making my way through my stash of pretty yarns that have been hoarded over the years. It's good for me :)

I've also almost completed Gene's socks which he's happy about... Just having some troubles with the heel (namely I misread the pattern when I made the first one and now have to decide what to do with the second one). Yeah, post-festival life is complicated.

I'm sure I'll live though.

Here comes the rain again

The last week or so has been wonderfully busy. Finally back to work (until Tuesday I think) working on Festival FINA we opened last night.

For the last week we've been getting Birrarung Marr ready for the festival (attaching sculptures to a hill, building roads, chasing flags, etc). So when we got the much needed rain last night we were still a little sad that the night was rained out. In the end only the performances at BMW Edge (known during the festival as "The Deep End") with it's free cabaret and the amazing Group F and Mechanic Vivante performed.

I do have pictures but the cable's upstairs and I'm lazy. They'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Everyone should come down and check out the festival for many reasons. Firstly there are some amazing acts from around the world. There's circus, live music, a dinosaur petting zoo... just to name a few things. Secondly it's all free. Yep. All of it. Bargain any day I say! Finally (before I get ready to sprint for the train) if people continue to go to these free cultural events, maybe if we start to have more cultural events...

Yesterday as we were battening the hatches and catching falling flags in the heavy rain I couldn't help but be reminded of Doha and every other outdoor event that I've done... it has to rain at least once and rather heavily. It's tradition :)

It's meant to rain again tonight but I think we'll be fine. We still got a great crowd for the river shows despite the rain

falling on my head like a memory

Brisbane Update

The season has changed and the festival's going well. Yesterday was aptly proclaimed Horror Day and it was possibly the busiest we've had all festival. The morning was spent trying to flatten the rather horribly rolled tarquet in the sun and lay the stuff so we could rehearse. We fell a bit behind but we may not have been at 100% as most of the crew had been out drinking with the crazy Alaskans for their final night drinks the day before.

After a bit of lunch we were much better and we battled our way through three plots, three dress/tech rehearsals and opened the first show 20 minutes after the last tech run. I've called my first show in four years which was kind of exciting. I was calling the show blind because I hadn't seen it before and there were cues written on pages 4-8 but not on the first three or the last ten. It went well though and there were no obvious mistakes. All shows went smoothly and were not in one way disturbed by the brawl outside the pub next door or the rooftop running backpack person who the police were trying to catch.

Today was a much easier start at 13:00. We were woken this morning at 9:17 by a phone call from one of my shows but that was rapidly sorted out. We were then treated to a televised church sermon which thoroughly confused me as I've been having trouble working out what day it is. A Saturday sermon apparently.

Tomorrow we're going to visit Timea and her folks in Fern Gully (if there are not environmentally friendly forest folk I'm not going to be impressed). Then it's more shows and then three bump outs.

We're excited to find that Nick's coming up to Brisbane to visit us next week and have been speaking to our accommodation to work out beds so all's going well.

Work is rolling in all at the same time - as it does - which is a weight of my shoulders as I've been going through my usual nearly-the-end-of-my-current-gig stress.

There's a couple of hours left before we have to go back to work for our next shift so we're going to play some network games to pass some time. Geeky yay!

Strike!

The new lodgings are still proving to be quite comfortable and I'm still revelling in the wonderfully hot showers. The only downside to our room was "Chainsaw Man" next door. You see our room, while being a private room, is joined to the next room by a locked wooden door. Appearances are deceiving as the door looks quite heavy but transfers sound quite well. We were awakened in the early hours of the morning by chainsaw-esque snoring from the room next to us. After a brief discussion of how unhealthy it is to snore quite that badly we managed to fall back asleep. I found myself unable to sleep because I was making sure that he kept taking fresh breaths of air between snores. This continued for the next couple of nights until yesterday when he finally moved to another room across the hall where we can't hear him. Yay!

Our trip to the Gold Coast was suitably touristy. Gene holds the QLD Putt Putt/Mini Golf title. I need to work on my geometry before I can truly improve at putt putt golf. It took us less than an hour to arrive in the Gold Coast and next to no time to travel down to Mermaid Beach. We checked out the beach which was much less pebbly than I'd been lead to understand. I should have taken some pictures but I was too busy lazing with Gene in the warm weather. Okay it wasn't that warm and the ocean breeze got a bit cool in the evening but it was still blue skies and sunshine for all.

I took us ten pin bowling to pass some time before dinner and it was a rather exciting day for me because I scored my first strike! Let me put this in context for you. I'd bowled about three times before that day and I pretty much spent 75% of those games bowling gutter balls. On Monday I not only managed to only gutter ball 4-5 times but I scored a couple of spares and then the miracle strike. Suitably I squealed like a girl and gave Gene a huge hug for giving me handy hints on bowling.

An hour of wacky arcade games later and we ate dinner at Billy Baxters the all you can eat ribs that Gene had was the way to go. I had an Aussie Breakfast (yes I know it's the wrong meal) which was a little lacking. I just couldn't resist the sound of steak with eggs and chips!

We made it home and watched the Dr Who Christmas special. I lamented Christopher Ecclestone's leaving the show but look forward to the new series anyhow.

I had a job interview yesterday which I'm pretty happy with. Last Friday was a bit annoying as I missed out on a job interview due to a lack of communication. I'm going to meet my interviewers when I get back to Melbourne which should be great. It's exciting to have job prospects!

The first season of shows in Fringe finishes tonight and we'll be sad to see our Alaskan cast go because they were great fun and possibly the biggest show we'll get in the Fringe section. Tonight we've got four shows to bump out and tomorrow morning we bump in the next three.

It's been really interesting seeing the difference in audiences up here in Brisbane. Henry V hasn't been doing as well as they hoped but I'm fairly sure it would have gone down a treat in Melbourne. We were talking to the designer yesterday and he mentioned that around Feb/March the company read the complete works of Shakespeare 24/7 for a week. People can phone in to read parts if they're interested and they've had people do that from different states in the US as well as calling from the UK. It sounded awesome! I think they do a webcast of it so I'm definitely planning to look into it later.

Time's ticking and I really should get going to work. I can't believe we've only been up here for a week and a half. It seems longer!

New Lodgings

We finally realised that Somewhere to Stay was not quite the cheapest place around and while pay day is Thursday we decided to tighten our belts a bit and try and save some cash - hopefully resulting in an even better 5.5 days holiday at the end of our trip. So I spent much of yesterday calling various hostels and inns and getting quotes.

Did anyone else not know that the Bledisloe Cup was being played in Briz Vegas last night? Anyhow, it turned out that last night was a bit night for Brisbane with two football matches, the opening night of A Dolls House and the inaugural Brisbane Festival Fringe Theatre so cheap decent accommodation is like hens teeth.

Today we finally decided on a $120 per week fully self-contained apartment. You may have noted the use of past tense there. We checked out of our lodgings, taxied to the apartments to be greeted by no one. We even wandered around the building. We tried to call the managers but they were't answering. In their defence they were sounding pretty crook. Anyhow we ended up chatting with one of the people staying there who we knew from the hostel we'd just checked out of (they were in the check out queue before us). She said that if we couldn't get hold of them we should probably move on because they just checked in and chose between the two available rooms. The room they picked was apparently in poor condition and they were in the process of scrubbing it down. They waited 1 hour for someone to let them in and if they were us they'd just slip away. We decided that having spent 30 minutes looking for someone to let us in that this might be the right idea.

In true movie style when we were standing on the kurb it started to drizzle. There had been sunshine just moments earlier! We hailed a taxi and headed on to the next place Valley Verandas where we're staying now. It's such a cozy little place! It's costing us $100 less per week than the previous place and although it's a share bathroom the bathroom's quite lovely. The shower door is broken so it floods a little in there but the wonderful gloriously hot showers make up for it. We've got a double room with a private balcony overlooking their outdoor garden area. There's a great and clean wardrobe, TV and (Gene's pretty excited about this) a DVD player. We finally got to watch the end of the Dr Who episode where Rose goes back to 1987 to meet her Dad.

We're now on the other side of Brisbane to where we were previously, North instead of South. Much closer to China town - we ate lunch there. China town also seems to be the adult shop district which was a little odd. The random shops seem to fit in there though and there's City Safe surveillance cameras about. It seems that there may be a few more up hills on the ride home but no quite as severe as the one leading up to Somewhere to Stay.

Tomorrow we're going to head down to the Gold Coast, Mermaid Beach to be specific. Hopefully the weather will be on our side!

Day 6 - Brisbane Festival Opening Night

It's actually a little cool in Brisbane today, a first for our trip. Apparently it's going to rain this weekend so I guess our good weather spell is over for now. Still, according to the weather report it's going to be 21 degrees today. Today is the opening night of the Brisbane Festival (yay for Spiegeltent!) and the Fringe section is opening tomorrow night. Today will be a day of rehearsals - plenty more rehearsals than shows get in Melbourne, or at least it feels that way - and then it's off to Spiegel to join the Opening Night Party.

We've discovered that we're the eldest of the Fringe crew so that's always a little odd. I'm never among the eldest in social or work settings! Tuesday was "crew bonding night" as I mentioned before. Last night we had a bonding session in the bar with some of the Alaskan crew. They were marvelling at the sun going down last night as they're in the middle of their Summer where the sun dips slightly but doesn't actually go down. It sounds awesome! I want to go and check out their 3 months of 24 hour night. I love night time.

While I'm on the topic of drinking two things I have to mention...
1. I'm very excited that the bar downstairs sells their rather palatable happy hour wine at $3 while their beer costs $4.50. More often than not I end up with the more expensive option because I don't like the cheaper beers that end up on happy hour menus.
2. Hazzar for the Spiegeltent's beer being supplied by the Belgian Beer Cafe. The beer should be good.

We've been dining on sandwiches lately in an attempt to save money but I decided it was time for a treat last night so we went to good ol' Sizzler. We ate all that we could, Gene moreso, and I was most happy with my cheese toast. Damn I love that toast. I should make it at home. Anyhow, it was great to eat until we were totally stuffed, even if that hurt a little. Pay day isn't till next Thursday so we're footing close to two weeks of costs before we get paid. It's a little painful to have to pre-pay everything but we're doing okay! Don't have the time to spend money anyhow, too many rehearsals to be had.

It looks like we don't have many full days off during the festival. In fact we have two (so not every Monday off it seems). We have this Monday off (which is unfortunate given our saving plans) and the Monday before our contract finishes (which is weird because we finish up on the Tuesday). I'm still thinking of getting a car and heading down to one of the putt putt places. Maybe a rainforest. It's hard to pick. Depends on the weather I guess!

Well I've got to head off to a tech rehearsal and make sure Gene's up before I head off - lucky bastard gets doesn't need to be in until 17:00.

Happy Bastille Day to all and we'll have a drink for you at the Spiegeltent tonight! (A lot of drinks but we'll spread them out perhaps...)

Day 3 - First Day of Work

First day of work today and it was pretty cruisy. We decorated the foyer of the Metro Arts Building which was good fun. We'll finish that off tomorrow after the cafe closes so that we don't annoy their customers too much. Wow does the food at Verve (the aforementioned cafe) smell good! The scent of bacon and eggs in the morning when you've missed breakfast and have already started work is just too cruel.

A bit of unloading gear and a whole lot of spray painting today and that's essentially it! Tomorrow is going to be a semi-paperwork day for me with some schedule stuff but I love that so I'm looking forward to it.

We had drinks at the Verve this afternoon/evening and the happy hour specials were lovely. The beer was Peroni which I have been assured is quite drinkable and I had the house white which was more than palatable - although I may have just been thirsty as Gene wasn't a big fan of it.

Spiegel is on its way - it's half up in King Georges Square so I'm quietly looking forward to many a night there. There's an archway that we don't quite remember but hey, it has been awhile since we've been there.

Last night we ate at a Vietnamese restaurant, the name of which escapes me, and the food was great. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from our place and kind to the budget. We had dinner with Gene's family from Brisbane which was great. It's nice to see some familiar faces.

I was originally planning to post some pictures but I seem to be having technical difficulties with the SD card drive on this computer. Having found the network cables though I'll just bring my laptop in one day instead and that will make life much easier.

Still enjoying Brisbane and I can't see that changing anytime soon. It was yet another warm day today that even the locals were in t-shirts so I felt a bit better about the whole t-shirt thing. There are some Alaskans here for the festival and they're also a little confused by the appearance of scarves and furry coats in this weather.

Wish I could send a little sunshine back home. Miss you all!

Catch Up

It's been over a week since I posted and it feels like an absolute age. That doesn't make it any easier to remember what's happened in the intervening days, as I don't really think that much has happened!

I sort of finished with the Games on Friday but I'm staying on as a casual to tie up some loose ends. I farewell Joe on Tuesday which will be sad. I feel those post-show blues coming on fast.

Comedy Festival @ Trades Hall owns all my nights except Monday (which the Sandman owns). I've got some great shows in my room(s) and think everyone should come along. The bars are great too. There's the Bella Union (excellent music, great bar prices, less swearing than Deadwood's but probably not by much) and the Bystander Bar. Definitely hoping to see many of you on Friday night for 1982 with a bullet. Bring on those 80's hits I say! Show starts around midnight and it's free so be sure to check it out.

Well, time for an early dinner before running of to see/work on funny things. Will definitely write a better post later. Very interested in catching up on Lisa's blog and adding some thoughts when my brain wakes up.

A New Year, a Big Day and an odd odour

It's been an excellent weekend overall! I just can't believe it's Monday so soon! Friday night I had a lovely dinner at Mr Wolf with Nomes, Nick and Caroline consisting of some delicious pizzas. I sense it would be an expensive dining experience if I brought Gene there though... although it would actually allow me to finish the fabulously rich chocolate mousse... Hmmm...

I arrived home to two very tired and hungry pugs who were happy to see me... or at least their dinner bowls full, before spending the rest of my evening working on my crochet dress.

Saturday morning saw me unpicking the previous evening's crochet work because TV is less good for my counting and instruction following capabilities when tired... Apparently I have limits.. pfft!

Being Chinese New Year my folks wanted to ensure that I didn't miss out on seeing them even though they are in Singapore so they headed to Wisma Atria and stood under the web cam and called to say hi which was really sweet. The evening was spent with the Nic(k)s deciphering our Chinese/Western zodiacs and it was hilarious! On occassions crazily accurate and other times just crazy. It was good fun.

My very first Big Day Out was much fun if a little warm and muggy. The V Invigorate Tent was a real winner for me with the misting spray and bubble machine providing entertainment for not just the patrons but the security staff too. The Silent Disco was awesome! A definite favourite of the day with Gene & I dancing like maniacs to songs that were being broadcast through headphones to all on the dance floor. The Lord Mayor John So seemed most amused at the sight although I don't think he joined the dancers.

So a little tired and a little sunburnt I jumped into the car today to head into town for work to discover that school holidays have just come to a close. Despite having left the house 15 minutes early I ended up 15 minutes late... and $21 poorer for the parking fee. Not happy.

It was a slow day in the office. Mainly waiting for people to get back to me. Tomorrow's looking better with lots of paperwork to process. I love my paperwork!

The most interesting thing that happened today was the discovery of a dead mouse under my boss' hi-vis vest... Good reason not to leave stuff on the floor of our current office really. :)
