It's been brought to my attention that I've been neglecting my blog. Skimming over the last couple of entries it occurs to me how inaccurate my blog is at the moment.
For one thing, it implies that I am in Adelaide, when in fact I didn't end up going to work on the festival at all because I wanted to spend the last few months of Mum's life in Melbourne with her (despite her protests). So I stayed in Melbourne and was lucky enough that a job came up on Billy Elliot which has kept me out of mischief for the last six months.
This is however drawing to a close as our season finishes in just under two weeks. After that, who knows what I'll be doing or where I'll be. Will endeavour to write more often, but make no guarantees.
Not much news other than that! Am looking forward to a break after the show. Quite possibly going to head off on a holiday. Destination and duration to be determined soon...
Anyway, I should give sleep another try. Am suffering from insomnia or possibly have reverted to a nocturnal state. Not good. Sleep is important according to the SBS documentary on sleep depreviation I watched last week... in two viewings... because I may have fallen a sleep due to being a tad sleep deprived. Ahem.
Sleep.

Numerical Update
611 days ago I left Brisbane and just 4 days ago I returned.
3 of those 4 days were spent with a fever averaging 38˚C. Yesterday I drank 1.25L of water and 1.15L of flavoured still mineral water. I also slept for 12 hours. I'm feeling much better and the fever is almost gone :)
It took me 1.75 bus rides to work out how to get the bus to stop without actually having to call out to the bus driver (or in the case of my first bus ride, continuing for an extra three stops). Apparently I managed to get the really old buses twice on my first day. All other buses have had the red stop button I'm used to.
I've only been working at the Brisbane Festival for 3 days and today marks 100 days till the festival opens.
While I've been up here I have read one book, gotten lost once and been to the doctor once. I've made an appointment to go back to get my third and final (yay!) Gardasil vaccination.
Since arriving in Brisbane I have received 22 text messages from people I know, one text message from someone I don't know, 12 messages via facebook and many emails of which 2 were personally addressed to me.
I have to be back in the office in 10.5 hours and given that I need at least 45 minutes to wake up, 10-15 minutes to get to the bus stop (which is not that far away but the traffic lights, and the traffic, are a little kooky) and another 20 minutes to get to work, I should probably go to bed now.
For those interested it took me 34 minutes to write all this because I kept getting distracted by a Skype conversation regarding donuts.

When the moon was smiling
Tonight when I left work I was thinking to myself how dark the car park was and having a "but not for night" sketch running through my mind simultaneously when I looked up and saw the moon smiling at me.
There's much less light pollution up here because it's a smaller city than Melbourne. As a result, the crescent moon was very bright and the shadow of the rest of the moon was visible as well. Very pretty!

Small Amusements
I've been hhttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifaving a little trouble getting to sleep lately. So I've taken comfort in the vast resource of entertainment that is the Internet.
From the evil laugh activated hand drier to the Death Star-esque building proposed in the UAE, there are hours of entertainment to be had.
Other current internet haunts include:
LibraryThing - where I'm in the slow process of cataloging my books
TwitterLit - First lines of books
The Anticraft - somewhat alternative craft... probably not something to show your folks!
Wired Magazine
Knitty - if only to be indecisive over my next potential knitting project
Tomorrow I'm thinking of heading to the Leica Gallery in Collingwood to check out the Qatar Migrant Workers photographic exhibition. I think I recognised a couple of the guys we worked with in Doha...
We'll see how that pans out when I eventually crawl out of bed.

Girly Work Day
It occurs to me that I've been rather more girly at work today than usual. Rather out of character I've let a chipped nail bother me (stupid thing keeps catching on stuff and I don't have a file to fix it. No wait... I love my leatherman!). I've discovered that the scent of diesel will follow you around as soon as you look at a fuel tank. To top it all off I've eaten copious amounts of chocolate failing to make up for a missed lunch. Even now that I've eaten dinner I still want more chocolate! *sigh*
Just one of those days I think. Day off tomorrow though so yay :)
Maybe, just maybe if I'm a good girl, I might have an iPod on Tuesday and then I'll stop whinging about not having it...

More ranting than expected
I was browsing through the Age website today, as I often do on my day off, and was immediately drawn to the two articles on cosmetic whitening creams in Asia. While I have no real opinion on the findings they presented in terms of mercury and chromium traces in the creams, I was surprised that "white is the new tan" in Asia. It really isn't that new when you think about it. Just take a look at any Chinese or Japanese illustrations and you'll see pale skin instead of olive skin. I understand that the title of the article is just something to catch the attention of the reader (worked for me) but a little consistancy in the reporting would have been nice. One of the articles finished with a comment about reverting back to old methods of temporary whitening like yoghurt.
It is true though, the love of fair skin among Asian communities. Browsing the cosmetics and skin care isle at Carrefour over here there's a miriad of products that can give you a perfect porcelain complexion. There are even capsules that you can take daily to assist with this complexion. Face wipes, soaps, masks... anything to keep the skin fair. At school I had a friend who stayed indoors/out of the sun for a couple of months because she had to go to a wedding and didn't want to be tanned. It's crazy but I guess we the grass is always greener. At least foot binding doesn't seem to have come back into fashion...
Speaking of fashion... as asmall tiny person I was a little alarmed and disappointed when I read an article and saw a news snippet that said that some bra manufacturers were planning to stop making A & B cup sizes in their bra. This really sucks. I'm small enough to be able to fit into size 12 Australian kids clothes. (Pretty funky clothes out there for twelve year olds let me just say!) I can't buy off the rack pants for ladies without having to hack at least 20cm off the bottom of them. Shoes are a nightmare. I buy virtually any shoe that fits me that I like because I don't come across them often. Now to hear that I might not be able to get a bra that fits with any great ease really pisses me off. Grrr. Small frustrated person right here. I don't mind wearing kids clothes, they're often comfortable and it's highly unlikely I'll end up at a party in the same frock as someone else. I think that when I start having trouble buying underwear that fits I'll quite possibly lose it. Sorry, that was probably sharing a bit much but it's frustrating being small sometimes! (I know that there are people even smaller than me and I shouldn't whinge but I'm selfish that way. Besides, I think they should have access to clothing that fits well too).
Now that that's out of my system... the article in the Age on fried coke also caught my mind. All you'd need to do is add some chicken and fries and you'd almost have a fast food meal on a stick.
I've been thinking about the time difference between Melbourne and Doha and I've decided it's not so bad. When I'm eating lunch in Doha is roughly when I'd be eating dinner in Melbourne. I'm not really having much dinner, just a light snack when I get home which is roughly what happens late at night in Melbourne and breakfast in Doha is lunch.
Sorry that was a bit random.
In other news my iPod has finally been dispatched from Sydney. Hopefully it will arrive on Sunday or Monday. I say hopefully because there's a huge backlog of freight at the airport apparently because there's some event happening here in December...
Well, I'm going to curl up on the couch and hitchhike the galaxy a bit.

Notes
One thing I've discovered, in Doha, is that I can only send emails via a web-based email page. This is rather frustrating when just wanting to say a quick hello to someone who hasn't sent you an email in a while. So I've decided to do a few notes to people instead based on the assumption that if they don't read the blog someone who knows them will pass the message on if they read it. Did that make sense?
In no particular order...
Nick C, if you find time to check out Fringe, say hi to Sara & the gang for me. Anyone else reading this should feel free to say hi to Sara for me as well, but as I know that Nick actually knows who I'm talking about I thought it might be easier for him to do so.
Mum & Dad hope the China trip is still going well. Keep off the local food Mum! Enjoy your desert experience.
Fi, how's the new place? Hope you're settling in well. Miss having a place to call home! It's a little weird not to have one. Say hi to Mark for me and give Tori (Tory?) a hug.
Naomi, I can't believe you're back in Melbourne in just under two weeks. Seems like ages since I saw you last after swing dancing. Enjoy the last of your time in Indonesia and have lots of fun! Even with the 4am wake ups :)
Tanya, Apricots Tomorrow will be on its way probably next week along with The Son of A Duck Is A Floater, I'm just waiting on the later to be in stock.
Matt, hope rehearsals are going well, send photos or something? Really wish I could be there to see it as everything you work on is always amazing. Don't stress, all will be well!
Philby, hope everything went to plan for you last week! It was good to hear from you. You missed out on a tasty brunch! Maybe after Ramadan eh? :)
Lisa, Paris still sounds amazing. Can't wait to catch up with you! The airline better be giving you lots stuff to make up for your luggage shmozzle.
Nic, all the best with your show. Look forward to hearing about it!
Paul & Deb, always great to hear from you both. Some excellent names in that email! How's the house going? (I seem to ask this a lot)
Rami & Caroline, love reading your blog. Wish I could make it for one of the meals! Maybe you'll still be going when we get back! All the best for the thesis Rami.
That's all for now, if I haven't left a "note" for you, I haven't forgotten you, I've probably been in contact with you recently. Miss you all!

Google in Qatar
Google
It can be very hard to look up things over here as the Google site always reverts back to the Qatari site... Reminds me I need to learn some Arabic!

Early Morning Manicure
It's 7:21am. The scent of freshly baked bread is in the air. Zeus & Clio are snuggled up together in their soft basket, full from an early breakfast, slightly puzzled as to their early awakening. I woke up at 5am this morning having fallen asleep sometime around two. I think I'm a little excited and stressed about Friday. Not sure what I'm stressed about. Everything's going smoothly. Definitely excited though. It'll be good practice for the long days ahead I guess!
So with nothing else to occupy my time until 9am, I figured I'd do my nails (as girls do). I've decided to go with a French manicure because it's simple and subtle.
I always wondered what made women pay what is sometimes a lot of money for a manicure. I mean you can do it at home (as I'm currently demonstrating). It serves no practical purpose other than suggesting that you pay attention to your grooming which, I'll admit, has it's benefits.
Acouple of few years ago my Mum treated me to a manicure at the hairdressers. It was such a pleasant experience! There I was sitting in the hairdressers with someone fixing my hair and someone polishing my nails. I felt like a pampered princess, which was wonderful after long hours of studying. Manicures have since become "me time". Particularly the ones I do myself at home. It's a self-indulgent activity which renders me useless (if it requires working with my hands) for as long as it takes for my nails to dry. There's plenty of time to ponder life, the universe and everything when you're waiting for your nails to dry!
On a completely different and non-nail related note, I can hear the sighs of relief from any boys/men reading this, it's amazing the things you discover when you're up early. Today I have discovered that sitting at my usual spot in the living room at the dining table early in the morning is a great place to work on your tan and be blinded.
Hmmm... what to write?
...
...
Oh that's right! I just uploaded some of the Brisbane pics the other day. Here's a few highlights.
Cancel that, Zoto are upgrading their servers so the pictures will have to wait. Sorry.
I have a dilemma. I'm about to go away for four months (eek!) and I don't have a book to take. Careful research has suggested that there are only two bookshops in Doha that sell English books and that it's best to bring your own. It's not that I'm not currently reading anything. It's more that I read quickly and need something that's not too challenging but something that will last. I usually take Stardust with me but, as Nick & Gene will attest to, I finished that on the flight back from Brisbane. It's a bit of a comfort read for me. Not too hard, not too light and it's funny. That's usually what I want after a long day at work.
I toyed with the idea of taking Lord of the Rings with me last night as it's something I've been meaning to read for years now. It would be optimistic though to think that I could get through it. I'd probably just end up writing more in my journal!
At the moment I'm reading The Eyre Affair which is great but I'm flying through it so it's not really an option. Something like Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell would be perfect.
So here I am. Departing in two days with no book to accompany me and only a day to watch season 2 of Battlestar Galactica with Mum & Gene. Life's hard isn't it? :)
Today I'm going to start packing. No really I am. I've already been mentally working out how I want to pack my stuff into my brand new red travel-pack. It's soooo pretty! It has a million straps to allow a customised fit and compression of your clothes. There's a wet stuff pocket for towels etc. There's even a camera section at the top so you have a safe water resistant place to keep it while hiking. The front section is detachable so you can use it as a day pack. It's just so well designed! Excellent harness too. Fits like a glove and has a 55L capacity. Dad got a black one with a 65L capacity. I figured that I'd go with the smaller one because I'm better off having a smaller pack that I can carry than a bigger pack that gives me back pain.
Packing is hard! It's going to be pretty warm while I'm in Doha. We miss the cool season by a month so it'll be 25 degrees celcius at the end of our trip. We are however considering going to Europe for a quick holiday after Doha. It's going to be cold in Europe. This could be problematic!
Well, my nails are done and it's time for me to get ready to go for my check up so I'll finish here for now. Thank you for keeping me company during my manicure!

Random Updates
My voice is better although not 100%. I really should stop using it until it gets better though, apparently I could do permanent damage. Good thing I'm not aspiring to a career in singing.
Gene and I received our itineraries today. We depart on the 16th May and get back on the 2nd June. So now all that remains is to get the house packed (pfft, easy done) and I need to get my passport renewed. This would have been much easier if I'd gotten my passport three months later than I did. However as the last time I needed a new passport was when I was 17yrs 9 months old, I needed to go through the full passport application process. Many thanks to Paul for his help with that.
We're slowly sorting out what stuff is going to go where. We've confirmed that the books and DVDs are mainly going to the Nic(k)s with the Xbox. Naomi kindly offered to take Herman (many thanks Nomes!) so we need to organise a time to drop him off. A random guest who came over last night has offered to take our big leather chairs. (Okay I'm exaggerating, Gene knew the guy from Adelaide I think). Now all that remains is getting boxes.
Sadly Gram is out of action. According to Gene she's not starting. This leads us to believe that not only is the transmission dead, the alternator has joined it. This is not well timed.
Tomorrow I have two things that I need to achieve. First I need to lodge my passport application otherwise I'm not going anywhere. Second I need to get a quote on fixing the car. I'm not optimistic on the cost of that.
On a more positive note though, I came home after work tonight and checked my email to discover that I've been asked to go and talk at a careers breakfast at my old school. I'm pretty excited about this because they never got any arts type people to talk when I was there. The biggest catch is it's at 7:30am. What highschool kid in their right mind is thinking about their career choie at that hour?! I sure as hell wasn't. Maybe that's why I'm in theatre... hmm.... Anyway, I can't do it this term so it might happen next term instead. Not sure what I'd say to the kids and their parents though...
Anyway, it's well past bedtime now. Not that I'm tired. I just need to be up early in the morning (read: up in the morning) so I should do the sensible thing and sleep.
Yep, bed. No really...
Captain Random Moment
The other day, when I'd lost my voice yet again, I was thinking about how cool it would be to go and watch a stand up comedian who couldn't speak. Crazy I know, but I reckon I could really get into watching a show where the entire thing was done in sign language and being translated. The physicality of sign language is what gets my attention. Okay I'm being weird so I'll stop now.
Gene and I received our itineraries today. We depart on the 16th May and get back on the 2nd June. So now all that remains is to get the house packed (pfft, easy done) and I need to get my passport renewed. This would have been much easier if I'd gotten my passport three months later than I did.
