Not only am I nocturnal, I'm beginning to make a habit of baking cakes at midnight. This is of course totally in line with Dad's nocturnal habits but I'm sure it's not good for us!
Tonight's cake was a simple pound cake made with a recipe that I've altered a bit and am still tweaking. Perhaps a little less egg but otherwise a delicious cake that will be perfect with my morning (ha!) coffee.
Speaking of coffee I don't think I've mentioned how in love I am with our new espresso machine, which in all honesty isn't that new any more as we've had it for almost a month... Purchased the day after the dishwasher caught fire which I also seem to have failed to mention. I guess that's what happens when I write while I should be asleep.
I have had a fairly productive day today despite only making it out of bed at 13:00. I've achieved 80% of what I wanted to do.
Tomorrow I'm aiming to:
- do at least one load of washing
- clean the bathroom
- head to the post office and post my international mail
- head to the supermarket to pick up some supplies for further baking adventures
- have a cup of coffee with a slice of tonight's cake
- read another chapter of The Pleasure of my Company and one of The Ghost's Child (apparently children's fiction and literature have captured my attention from the stack of sci-fi/fantasy that's sitting by my bed
- write a few more cards
- finish the entrelac scarf that I've been making out of Noro's Silk Garden yarn.
We'll see how I go... first I need to get out of bed before noon! Excellent practice for Tuesday when I have to be at work at 09:00. Wish me luck!

Wooly Days
The last two days could best be described as wooly. I've felt a little wool in the head but it's what happens when I slow down again.
There's also been much wool shopping (oh the retail therapy) lately after speeding through my current partial stash of yarns to try and make a scarf that Naomi could take to Europe. The speeding through my partial stash comment is a little inaccurate as I still have quite a few random balls of yarn...
It's just that I can't walk past a well priced ball of lovely yarn and K-Marché and Spotlight were having sales...
So Mum and I have spent a couple of days of QT trawling through bargain yarn bins together. Mum scoring record deals like 40c for twenty balls of baby yarn while I lashed out on $24 dollars worth of mohair/wool for a long cross-over wrap. I still have a bit to learn about saving...
We've since been inspired (or possibly it's the guilt of having so much yarn) into holding a stall at the end of the month. That way we can continue to knit and crochet to our hearts content while not filling the house with millions of scarves, socks and other items.
Having finished our knitted socks for our boys (Gene & Dad) we've moved on to making scarves. I started two today... one with a pretty shell pattern (it's a peachy pink) and the other with an open-work pattern that I'm in the process of designing (making it up as I go) that's based on a crocheted block.
Knitting socks is fun but incredibly addictive. Even though it can be exasperating at times once you've made a pair of socks you just want to dive into another sock pattern. There are quite a few I want to try at the moment. One's a lacy stocking-sock from a leaflet Mum got the other day, then there's a crocheted sock... not to mention the space invaders socks that I want to make for Gene... On top of all of this we got some great self-patterning sock yarns that we can make basic socks with pretty patterns!
So many socks, so little time!

Things Beginning With the Letter "s"
Festival Fina closed on Sunday with some delightful weather and crowds after a wet and windy start. Definite favourites for the festival were (in no particular order) Quidams - Herbert's Dream, Group F, Guo Yue, ERTH Dinosaur Petting Zoo, Ulik and Le Snob and the memorable installation of Méchanique Vivante's Song of the Sirens. It was great to see all the performances run smoothly and even better to see people showing up in the Melbourne weather. Yay for Nick and Nomi coming to say hi!
I must say that's one thing I love about Melbourne. Weather is no barrier for the arts/festival loving people. They just bring their umbrellas, jackets and rugs and huddle together to enjoy the show. It's great and very much appreciated when you're totally soaked to the skin and still have at least 8 hours of your shift to go.
After a swift load-out of the bulk of the festival life's been slipping back to craft heaven for me. Mingled of course with large doses of Final Fantasy XII and season 1 of Buffy.
This Sunday we'll be getting ready to farewell Naomi with a lovely picnic and what was going to be some blues dancing that I was very much looking forward to...
Sadly I slipped down the bottom half of the stairs yesterday and landed (well but painfully) on my knee and ankle. It all happened a bit quickly and involved the dog stepping on the back of my pants causing the fall as I was holding my laptop... Laptop is in tact but my leg is still a little sore when I put weight on it. I may have to take a rain check on the dancing for a bit.
So I've decided to spend my restful time making scarves to bring to the picnic on Sunday in the hopes that they might find a good home. I'm slowly making my way through my stash of pretty yarns that have been hoarded over the years. It's good for me :)
I've also almost completed Gene's socks which he's happy about... Just having some troubles with the heel (namely I misread the pattern when I made the first one and now have to decide what to do with the second one). Yeah, post-festival life is complicated.
I'm sure I'll live though.

Lessons learnt at 02:00
I wasn't planning on watching the soccer tonight. Gene's switching to nocturnal mode to prepare for overnight work tomorrow. I offered to stay up with him and here I am.
Pretty exciting match. I think Australia played well and it was an unfortunate end to the match. I am basing this entirely on my lack of knowledge of the game. Still as a non-soccer person I enjoyed watching it.
I even learnt a few things while watching the match. I learnt a bit about the rules of soccer. I also learnt that I can't knit complicated cabled scarves which require me to read charts backwards & forwards while interpreting the symbols differently depending on whether it is an odd or even row at 02:00.
So we've only got another hour and a half to go before it's bedtime.
Not sure why I decided to ramble on in my blog right now. I think it's just something I do when I'm not sure what to do.
Weird.

Geeky combinations
Still no headway with Herman. Even though I feed him every day and bring him various presents we're still barely acquaintences. *sigh* I've even started to try and make sure the presents are old bits of clothing so that he can get used to my scent (that sounds weird doesn't it?). As of today I'm going to start just spending more time in the room with him. It's hard now that he's not in our living room! I think I missed the alpha rat boat when he bit me the first time and I just got upset. A little pathetic really on my part, but I felt really betrayed by our little Hermoine when it happened because we were good friends and he used to just climb out of the cage and into my hands. Then puberty hit and the hormones took over and our friendship was strained. I've never had this problem with larger animals. Dogs, cats, cows and even goats have been easier to gain the affection of and understand. Yet I am so totally lost at how to win the friendship of a rat. Go figure.
The knitting and crocheting goes well though. I learnt a wonderful new technique which is foundationless double crochet (US terms). In a nutshell, in case anyone cares, it's a method of starting your work where you don't need to work a foundation chain before starting. You do it at the same time as your first double crochet row. Much more efficient in my opinion. That and I hate crocheting into a foundation chain.
So far I've made a capelet and I've almost finished my decorative belt. Just miscalculated on the yarn so I'm going to have to sneak out of the house to Lincraft before Gene gets home. He took the car so I have to wait for Mum. Shhh... don't tell Gene. I also want to pick up some more yarn to make Gene a Linux Scarf. It's geeky but not too crazily geeky. It uses a technique called illusion knitting which means that you can only see the image at certain angles. So this scarf will just look like a normal striped scarf except at certain angles you can see the Linux penguin. Très cool! I've been having lots of fun over the last couple of days trawling the Internet with Mum for new patterns and inspriations. It's great to have someone else who's excited about geeky knitting & crochet stuff.
Also helps that she's willing to watch sci-fi with me. We ended up watching Startrek: Next Generation last night (the one where Picard's the arbitor for the installation of the next Klingon leader). We drew the line at the original series though. I still can't quite bring myself to watch that. I did watch the Trouble with Tribbles episode (or at least that's what I think it's called) which was great with all the furry rocks and all. Gene's insisting that now I've seen that I need to watch the DS9 episode where they go back to that episode. Sounds like a plan!
I've almost finished reading Gloriana
by Michael Moorcock. It really shouldn't have taken me this long to read it but I got distracted by my geeky obsessions. Well worth a read if anyone wants to borrow it. Kind of like Gormenghast but kinkier and a bit lighter. I think I'll start on Mother London next.
Tonight I'm meant to be catching up with Nick and Claire but as no details have filtered back to me yet, that still t.b.c. Gene's planning on making rice paper rolls for dinner so I should start getting together a list of what I need to buy at the supermarket so we don't have a repeat of my last supermarket outing.
Happy birthday Naomi (from Gene & Herman too)!

Sleepy musings
Welcome to the musings of Nocturnal Sarah. I can't even blame jet lag because Japan's only an hour behind Melbourne time. Too many late nights and too much sleeping in and here I am, constantly tired.
It's funny because I'm actually getting plenty of sleep. I'm averaging eight to nine hours a day. It's just not quality sleep. I read somewhere that the human body doesn't sleep well during the day because we're naturally predisposed to sleeping at night, hence shift work tends to suck. The room we're sleeping in gets pretty light when the sun comes up, even in Winter, so I've been waking up around 8-9am anyway but falling back asleep because "bedtime" is currently around 3am.
The biggest hurdle for me turning my sleep cycles around is my love of night. It's always so quiet and peaceful at night. I find the surrounding darkness outside comforting. Even when I'm awake at sensible/normal hours, I still perk up around midnight when I should be going to sleep.
It's only 9:39pm right now as I'm writing but I'm ready for a nap.
Instead, I'm going to finish off the scarf that I'm making for my cousin, Nadia, as an exceptionally belated birthday present. Her birthday was at the end of May. I'm a terribly slack cousin I know. I'm actually pretty excited about knitting this scarf as it's my first design. It's made up of one basic stitch and a variation on this stitch (followed by variations on the variation) so it's actually a pretty simple design but I figure it's a starting point and we all have to start somewhere right?
One more musing before I finish for the night.
While I was overseas I carried a camera with arms reach almost all day everyday. If there was something in the world that captured my attention then I took a photo of it. Now that I'm back home, the camera's been packed away and I feel just a little naked without it. There are moments that pass me through the day that I would like to have captured but they're gone by the time I wish I had my camera with me. I suppose it's my love of documenting coming out in a less administrative form.

Life is like my novel...
Well considering the daily writing isn't going so well, I suppose you can only guess at how the novel writing's going!
Happily I think I've worked out the start (or several versions of it) and all that remains to be done is for me to commit it to paper. I'm not too stressed about my lack of word count as yet as I've always been a bit of a last minute worker so I'm quietly hopeful that I'll improve in due course.
My current procrastination task is making a going away present (scarf in feather and fan lace knitting) for Lisa who leaves next Thursday but is having drinks this Saturday. I've got about 15cm of scarf done so it's looking a little like my novel... only slightly ahead.
Work is slowly picking up and the hours are getting gradually longer. I'll be house sitting again in January which I'm slightly worried about because I'm fairly sure I'm going to be working ridiculous hours... Hopefully the dogs won't be too traumatised... *sigh*
Okay no more "recreational" writing... time to hit that novel!

Student again!
Woohoo! My confirmation of registration letter arrived from Open Uni. I am a student once more! (I am sensing many exclamation marks in this entry) Legal Framework here I come... well as soon as I can get the text book anyway. I've only got a week and a bit to do so too . I'm hoping the State Library of Victoria can help me out there. Failing that there's always those academic bookshops in town. As much as I love a new text book, my finances are telling me second hand is definitely the way to go.
Now on a side note... I've noticed that when I sit at my computer (as I am rather obviously doing so now), my right hand always gets really cold. I mean REALLY cold. Mucy colder than the left hand, which still feels kinda warm. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm typing or using the mouse or the keypad. I tried wearing gloves, fingerless mitts, hunters mitts and nothing seems to work. Guess this will make NaNoWriMo an interesting and fun time of year. Particularly as I have an exam in November for Legal Framework. I'm sensing a rather stressed Sarah then.
Today has been a good day so far, although my dreams last night were a little stressful. Can't even remember why I was stressed in them. I just remember they weren't half as pleasant as the ones from the night before.
I've settled happily into a semi-nocturnal state. I'm more than happy to go to bed around 2-3am but seem to be rising at 8-9am. Oh well, I guess I'm out of my exhausted phase and back to my usual 6 hours per night!
Went into town today and got the rest of the "Rockery" wool I needed to finish my current scarf. Also bought another two balls of wool for another scarf... they were just so soft! Here's hoping I've got the right needles.
Depending on which way you look at it, I'm a great or terrible shopper. A frequent impulse buyer but also one that deliberates for ages doing so. Crazy. I ended up buying another John Varley book "Red Thunder". It was only $17.95. Much cheaper than the others. I keep thinking if I repeat that often enough that I'll convince myself it was a sensible thing to do. I have a feeling that "The Black Crusades" may have to wait. I'm such a fickle reader at times. Too much selection at present!
I hear my wheat bag calling me... or more accurately the microwave calling my frozen right hand. Also Nick, who I haven't seen in what feels like ages, will be here soon for coffee. Yay!
Apologies for the poor grammar. This is something I'll need to work on soon...

Lost Hour(s)
Another lazy day today. Nothing truly unusual! Oh except that today was one of the currently rare days where Gene didn't actually have to be anywhere today, so that was nice. Unsurprisingly we got up late and slacked about the house for a bit. The best bit was listening to the mixed mini-disc that he'd put together for me about two years ago (I promise I won't get too mushy). It has great songs like "Frontier Psychiatry", "Common People" (the Pulp version NOT William Shatner) and "Here Comes Your Man" just to name a few of the songs that I hadn't heard in ages. A great mix of mellow, rocky and just silly songs (like "Old Man Sam" which is almost country rock in some ways but still so good).
We finally made it to the supermarket today, not that we bought any food. No, that would be a little too crazy. We ended up buying toothbrushes (with tongue scrapers to "improve our breath", man we're suckers sometimes), exit mould, some scrubbing sponges and some cordial. Oh and we made two dollars for returning the trolley we picked up.
The rest of the day is the best though. We spent the entire evening staying home and watching Press Gang Season 2 (which I'm shocked and horrified is not coming up on the amazon search below). Ah Spike and Linda. So much 80's goodness! Now it's just a matter of waiting for Season 3 to come out on DVD.
I was knitting a scarf out of "Rockery" wool today while watching Press Gang and have rather annoyingly run out of the wool. So I guess I'll be making a trip into town for that. Oh that and money's come through for the last play I did so YAY! I'm going to use some of it to get wool for the scarf I said I'd design for one of the cast members. I'd like to finish it for her sometime before the cold weather disappears.
I'm also hoping to make something for my little cousins (who won't be little for much longer I think). They'll be in town this weekend for my aunt's 60th birthday. I hardly ever see them and I want them to know that I do think of them. I'm just terrible with kids really. Well, they seem to like me well enough. I think it's because I'm generally their height or smaller (by the time they turn 10) therefore I don't really pose much of a threat. I don't know. I just didn't spend much time with people who were younger than me growing up and I guess I'm paranoid that I'll be patronising even though I've been assured that I'm not. If there's one thing I hated when I was little it was being patronised.
Tomorrow should be a good day. As long as I drag my sorry self out of bed at a decent hour and remember everything that I need to bring when I pick Gene up from work, things should work out well!
We're going to my parents tomorrow night so that I can spend some time back at their place doing the family thing & fixing up our computers. That and Gene's working out that way for the better part of the day.
Okay. Now it's time for me to stop blathering on. I'm a little too distracted to write I think. Distracted by what? By pretty much anything and everything.
